Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has this afternoon provided an update on contract talks between the Gunners and midfielder Jack Wilshere.

Fitness struggles

Wilshere’s injury troubles over the course of his career have been widely covered in the press, with a string of lengthy spells on the sidelines having held the technically-gifted star back from a potentially top-class career.

Following a nightmare campaign during which he managed just 3 Premier League appearances for the Gunners in 2015/16, Wilshere was sent out on loan to Bournemouth last season.

He managed a respectable 27 league outings with the Cherries, but a hairline crack in his calfbone in April ruled the marauding midfielder out until August.

Return to form

Despite being heavily linked with a move away from the Emirates over the summer, Wilshere surprisingly remained in North London, with his impressive early-season performances in the Carabao Cup and Europa League having since led to a Premier League recall for the Englishman.

He has gone on to play the full 90 minutes in 7 of Arsenal’s last 9 league outings, with large sections of the Gunners’ fanbase now calling for the 34-time capped international to be handed a new contract at the club.

Staying put

Wilshere himself has remained relatively tight-lipped over the possibility of extending his stay at the Emirates, though he did take to Instagram in December to hint that he is keen to stay with Arsenal for the long-term:

‘Still to make the decision’

Speaking in a press conference earlier today ahead of Arsenal’s Europa League clash with Östersund, Gunners boss Arsene Wenger was questioned on any progress in talks regarding Wilshere’s new deal, with the Frenchman revealing:

‘That decision doesn’t depend only on me.’

‘I want him to sign very quickly.’

‘We are still to make the decision and find the pen somewhere. I’m happy to give him one.’
