Arsenal legend Ray Parlour feels Juventus star Giorgio Chiellini would be the perfect signing to cap the club’s summer transfer business this year, as reported by Goal.
Parlour recently discussed where the Gunners still need to improve in the transfer window and identified Chiellini as the man to remedy their defensive woes.
The club needs an old-school leader who will put their body on the line and demand the best from his team-mates. Chiellini would be the dream defender, though he’s getting on a bit.
Arsenal have already strengthened their central defence this summer through the acquisition of Sokratis Papastathopoulos from Borussia Dortmund, but Parlour feels added defensive muscle is a necessity.
Although Parlour hailed the club’s signing of Sokratis from Dortmund, he highlighted Juventus star Chiellini as the perfect signing for Unai Emery.
Sokratis is very experienced and he’s a big game player with great leadership qualities. The fact he knows [Pierre-Emerick] Aubameyang and [Henrikh] Mkhitaryan so well is a bonus too.
I think Arsenal still need to improve their defence, though, even after signing Sokratis and (Stephan) Lichtsteiner.
Chiellini is an established international for the Italian national side and remains a mainstay under Massimiliano Allegri at Juventus. This, of course, indicates that any transfer away from Serie A would be a surprise for Chiellini.
However, Parlour evidently feels that if Arsenal are going to make significant progress in shoring up their defence, Chiellini would be the perfect fit.
