Arsenal’s search for a new front man continues. One of the targets, Dortmund’s Polish striker Robert Lewandowski has ruled himself out of a switch to the Emirates. While confirming his exit from Signa Iduna Park, he revealed the identity of his new club and it would be Dortmund’s bitter rivals Bayern Munich.
“Yes, because then I can officially sign the contract.” (Lewy to Sport 1).
That was his response when quizzed whether he would sign for Bayern in January. As a would-be free agent, he is allowed to sign a pre-contract with another club 6 months to the end of his current deal.
While I am not denying his quality, I don’t think he is the kind of striker that we need. He is everything like Giroud and just like the Frenchman, he lacks the versatility to play on the wings. This means with Wenger’s current formation of a lone striker, it will either be him or the Frenchman starting and that is tantamount to wasting of talents. Both are good enough to lead the Gunners’ attack. Now that he is off the radar, who can Arsenal go for? Suarez, Rooney, Benzema are all targets.
The Premier League duo of Rooney and Suarez are still Arsenal targets but luring them away from their current clubs won’t be easy. Manchester. United are adamant they won’t sell Rooney to rivals, ditto for Liverpool too. I believe they could relax the stand for us, after all, a good turn deserves another. We sold Van Persie to them and he won them the league, let them sell Rooney to us and see what he will help us win. Though Liverpool were able to hold on to Suarez in the summer, a sterner test of their resolve awaits them in the winter window. They were hopeful of Real’s interest so they could ship him outside of England but with Perez’s declaration that the Los Blancos would be looking to trim down their squad rather than add to it, they might be forced to consider Arsenal. Hopefully, Wenger will offer something. worth considering and not what will end up irking them.
Benzema is yet another target though not one highly rated by me. The Frenchman won’t come cheap but he isn’t an upgrade to Giroud. Madrid will want to overprice him because he is a big name but on current form, he is just average. In our search for a striker, we shouldn’t only look for a goalscorer, we should look for a versatile one that can play anywhere across the front line. Rooney and Suarez fit the bill perfectly.
