Fabian Schar could be set for a move to the Emirates after impressing Arsenal scouts over the past 18 months.
The 21-year old is a regular for FC Basel and was instrumental in their run to the Europa League semi-finals last year. He helped beat Arsenal’s rivals Tottenham Hotspur in that run which will also please Arsene Wenger.
Wenger has since set his scouts to watch all of FC Basel’s Champions League’s group games including their surprising 2-1 victory over Chelsea.
He has also made his international debut making three appearances in Switzerland’s World Cup qualification for which they topped their group. What is even more impressive is that he has netted three goals in three international caps, which has proven he can be deadly in the opposition box.
His stock at the World Cup is certain to rise and Wenger knows only to well what can happen after losing target Mesut Özil to Real Madrid after the German dazzled at the 2010 World Cup in South Africa, despite showing genuine interest before the tournament.
The Gunners are looking to sign Schar for as little as £5 million in January. They need more defensive cover even if Thomas Vermaelen sticks to his word of fighting for his place. His price could double or triple after the World Cup and Wenger doesn’t want to risk that happening again.
Julian Draxler is another player he is watching closely and although he will be unable to sign the German in January, he hopes to have a deal in place before the World Cup starts.
