According to latest reports, Manchester United are set to battle Arsenal and Chelsea for the signature of Southampton’s highly rated left back Luke Shaw. The Saints academy has been famed for producing exciting talents and have already produced Walcott, Bale and Chamberlain with Shaw been the latest out of the successful ludus.
Since his days in the Championship, clubs have been hot on his trail and his maiden season in the Premier League meant more clubs became interested but chief amongst them were Arsenal and Chelsea but now, it seems the Red Devils have joined the chase. During the summer, they pursued Baines but failed to agree a fee with Everton, now it seems they want the Saints prodigy as Evra’s long term replacement.
While I agree both Chelsea and Manchester United might need him more since their current left backs (Evra and Cole) are aged and need long term replacements, Arsenal don’t really need him. Left back isn’t a position we are in dearth of as our current hands aren’t only capable, they are also young. Shaw would find games rare to get and that would stymie his progress.
Besides, Southampton would want the highest possible fee for him if they are forced to sell and that would create an artificial price for him. While I agree that Arsenal have money to spend but instead of splashing it out on an expensive luxury, we should rather focus on strengthening our weak point and that’s signing a marquee striker.
