We take a swipe away from the hassles of the transfer window.
There will be no Champions League football for Arsenal goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny this term, as AS Roma were prevented from qualifying by Porto who whitewashed them in Italy.
Roma laboured to a 1-1 draw against Porto in Portugal last week and, the Serie A side would have won – had former Gunner Thomas Vermaelen not got himself sent off earlier on. The Serie A giants, however, saw two reds again last night, playing the last forty minutes of the encounter with nine men.
When Daniele de Rossi got sent off 39 minutes into the game, Porto only had a one-goal lead, but as Emerson also got his marching orders after 50 minutes, Roma could only hold on for 23 more minutes before goals from Layun and Corona helped Porto win the tie 3-0 on the night.
Szczesny only returned to the starting line-up for the Champions League qualifier after missing the first leg as he was not match fit.
“I’m very disappointed. It was a big game for us, but not just that we lost, the way we lost control of the game was very disappointing”, Szczesny told Mediaset Premium.
