Kylian Mbappé has told AS Monaco that he wants to leave the club in the current transfer window, according to reports.
Mbappé has been the subject of intense speculation all summer, with almost every top club in Europe linked to his signature at some point. Arsenal were linked with world record bids, among others, but Arsène Wenger later said that these rumours were false.
However, while it seemed clear that most top clubs had at least some interest in the young Frenchman, there was no evidence that he was willing to force the issue and push for a move. Add to this the fact that Tiemoue Bakayoko, Bernardo Silva and Benjamin Mendy all moved on for big money, and Monaco had very little reason to sell.
Now the situation has apparently changed, as L’Equipe report that Mbappé has told the club that he wants a move this summer. This news comes as Neymar is pushing for a Barcelona exit and is apparently close to achieving this goal. L’Equipe report that Barcelona are one of the serious contenders for Mbappé’s signature.
If Neymar’s Paris Saint-Germain move goes through and Barcelona make £198m from the transfer alone, before considering how much they save on Neymar’s wages each year, then they would certainly be financially capable of a move for the monaco striker.
Mbappé is still only 18 years old, and last season contributed to 40 goals in 44 appearances. It’s easy to see why so many clubs are interested, although spending over £100m on a player who has only done it for one season seems like a risk.
With only two years left on his contract, Monaco may want to sell while Mbappé’s still heavily sought after, in case he has a weaker season in 2017/18, runs down his contract and leaves for much less.
