Unai Emery is set to reunite with one of the stars that was key to his success at Sevilla, according to reports.
The Gunners have agreed to move for Sevilla goalkeeper Sergio Rico in a bid to reunite the shot stopper with Emery, but will face competition to secure his signature, according to reports.
Sensational shot-stopper Rico, though with just one international cap for Spain, has been a mainstay in Sevilla’s team over the past four years, playing almost 150 games for the club.
He played a huge role in Sevilla’s remarkable Champions League victory over Jose Mourinho’s Manchester United side earlier in the season and his performances have caught the attention of a number of clubs around Europe.
Popular Spanish media outlet Marca, say the Gunners have expressed interest in signing the 24-year-old stopper during the summer transfer window.
Emery worked with Rico while he was in charge of Sevilla and is expected to sign a goalkeeper ahead of his first season at the Emirates.
Current Arsenal number 1, Petr Cech, had a difficult campaign in Arsene Wenger’s final season at the club and the Gunners will look for a new number one despite Cech deciding to remain at the Emirates.
Arsenal are not alone and Marca adds that Watford are also believed to be admirers of Rico.
The Sevilla shot stopper made his international debut for Spain in 2016 and was part of the squad for the European Championships that year.
He has been at Sevilla since the age of 13 but the prospect of joining a Premier League club would be an attractive proposal.
Arsenal are also expected to sign Stephan Lichtsteiner, who will leave Juventus this summer, and Sokratis Papastathopoulos from Borussia Dortmund.
