Ashley Cole has reportedly emerged as a shock transfer target for Aston Villa after he was released by LA Galaxy.

The 37-year-old was one of eight players to leave the MLS club after they failed to make the play-offs.

Cole is weighing up his options and is understood to be interested in returning to England, four years after leaving his last Premier League club Chelsea.

The Mirror report that Cole received a number of offers from Championship clubs before it was even announced he was leaving Galaxy, with Villa said to be one of the sides keen on signing the former England full-back.

Most bookmakers have Villa as favourites to land Cole in what would see him re-unite with ex-Chelsea teammate John Terry, who is assistant to Dean Smith.

Cole earned 107 caps for England between 2001 and 2014, making him the sixth most-capped Three Lions international of all time.

Villa’s current first-choice left back is Neil Taylor, the Welsh international who has made 13 appearances so far this season.
