Arsenal manager Unai Emery is plotting a shock move for Manchester United midfielder Juan Mata, according to reports. Spaniard Emery has made a fine start to his managerial career in England, with his Arsenal side winning 11 consecutive matches in all competitions. The Gunners have climbed to fourth in the Premier League table and are currently top of their Europa League group
But Emery is already weighing up where he needs to strengthen his squad at the Emirates and will keep tabs on Mata’s situation at Old Trafford. The Daily Star say Emery is a huge admirer of Mata, who he managed for several years while the pair were both at La Liga side Valencia. Mata, 30, will be out of contract come the summer and Manchester United have so far been unable to convince him to sign a contract extension.
It is claimed Emery will see how the season pans out before deciding whether to move for Mata, with his experience potentially invaluable. Any move for Mata may also be tied to Aaron Ramsey’s future in north London. The Wales star is set to become a free agent after talks over a new deal collapsed. It is believed Mata is happy at Old Trafford and keen to stay at Manchester United, but will need convincing that he will remain a key player for Jose Mourinho.
Ramsey, meanwhile, said last week he wanted answers from Arsenal after his contract offer from the club was surprisingly withdrawn. He said: ‘We all know the contract has been taken off the table and I still don’t know why because a few weeks before we’d sort of agreed a deal and I was ready to sign. ‘But something happened within the club and I’m not exactly sure what it was.
