Julio Cesar’s agent has revealed that Arsenal are still a concrete option for the Brazilian shot-stopper, after his move to Serie A side Napoli fell through. Napoli have since signed Pepe Reina on loan from Liverpool. His move fell through due to an inability to agree personal terms with the club.
His agent, Josias Cardoso said, “Is there still hope of seeing him in Italy? If I don’t have official contact with a club, then I cannot have hope. I recently have not had contact with Milan or Roma. Arsenal remain a concrete option.”
Arsenal have been linked with many goalkeepers this transfer window, particularly Cesar. The Gunners haven’t had a truly top class keeper since the departure of Jens Lehmann, and David Seaman. This want for a keeper stems from the fact that current No 1 at The Emirates, Wojciech Szczesny had a poor season, and his fellow Polish keeper, Lukasz Fabianski is prone to flapping. However, after Fabianski’s shock inclusion for the crucial away tie at The Allianz Arena, the goalkeeping situation seems to have improved, with Fabianski making many important saves, and Szczesny seeming a more mature player after Fabianski was injured towards the end of the season, commanding the area very well.
Things seem to be improving on this end, and though Julio Cesar was a world class goalkeeper, he is 33 years old, and is not getting younger, and his reflexes will start to slow. The new season and the competition between Arsenal’s two polish keepers could push them on, and help them realise their true potential, and Arsenal might find themselves with two great keepers.
