As the Argentina players and all Argentines the world over mourned defeat and international retirement of their superstar Lionel Messi, just miles away, Chile, and one man in particular would be having the best time of his life.
Not only has Alexis Sanchez just won his second Copa America triumph with his country, but also, the Gunner was also voted Player of the Tournament to cap off a memorable evening.
Chile’s triumph over Argentina came from the penalties shootout after neither team could find the net in 120 minutes of football, but the Gunner once again played his part – just as he had in the previous five matches for Chile.
Sanchez netted three times in the tournament including a brace against Panama on June 15, with only team-mate Eduardo Vargas, Messi and Gonzalo Higuain scoring more.
Having a good time both with his team, the Chilean posted an image on his Instagram account from the Chile dressing room at the MetLife Stadium in New York.
With the brilliant Copa America trophy on his left knee, his Golden Ball gong on his right knee and a winners’ medal round his neck, Sanchez was justifiably delighted.
He wrote; I am speechless. Just thank my team-mates and all the people who supported us … Now Chileans enjoy.
By the time they arrive at home from USA, the squad is sure to receive a hero’s welcome after a second successive Copa America accomplishment.
There is a slight concern for the Gunners since there was an ice pack strapped on Sanchez’s left ankle, which has sparked reports stating the Chilean left the stadium with an injury. Sanchez now will enjoy some time off before returning to the Emirates Stadium to being pre-season with his club team-mates.
On July 31, Arsenal’s first pre-season fixture will see the Chilean return to America to face Chivas de Guadalajara before their Premier League campaign begins against Liverpool on August 13.
