Arsenal will be without David Ospina and Henrikh Mkhitaryan for their game against Southampton on Sunday after the pair picked up injuries and they both could be out for weeks.
Ospina reportedly injured his ankle in the final training session before the game against CSKA Moscow.
Although it seemed like Wenger was simply dropping him, the manager told the media a scan had revealed Ospina could be out of action for up to three weeks.
Mkhitaryan is also set for a spell on the sidelines with a knee injury picked up after a heavy CSKA challenge during Thursday night’s game.
The Armenian tried to run off the knee knock but had to be replaced a few minutes later.
The scan today was reassuring,” Wenger said at his press conference about Ospina. “He will be out for two to three weeks. Yesterday we were scared it was a very serious injury but the scan was reassuring. Yes [he did it in training] – he just moved back from a shot and sprained his ankle, without any contact. It was just a bad movement.
“He [Mkhitaryan] has a knee problem, we don’t know how bad it is, we have to assess it tomorrow morning. He will certainly be out for Sunday.”
On Friday, Wenger offered a further update about Mkhy and it wasn’t good.”He has a scan this afternoon but his medial ligament is touched so he will not be available for Sunday. The first impression is not too positive today. I fear [it could be several weeks] and I hope I’m wrong.”
Matt Macey will keep his place on the bench for the game against the Saints at Ashburton Grove on Sunday.
Arsenal have more options to replace Henrikh, although none as talented. Alex Iwobi is likely to come back into the starting lineup in his place with a shuffle further forward that will also see Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang return to the starting lineup.
