Southampton expect Virgil van Dijk to remain at the club following their show of strength with Liverpool, despite continued interest from various other clubs.
Arsenal, Chelsea and Manchester City are all understood to be keen on signing the Dutch centre-back.
However reports suggest that Southampton now think the 25-year-old will stay at St Mary’s.
It comes after they made a complaint to the Premier League about Liverpool’s pursuit of the player. That led to a public apology from Liverpool, who announced that they had ended all interest in the player.
Liverpool apologise to Southampton
‘Liverpool Football Club would like to put on record our regret over recent media speculation regarding Southampton Football Club and player transfers between the two clubs.
‘We apologise to the owner, board of directors and fans of Southampton for any misunderstanding regarding Virgil van Dijk.
‘We respect Southampton’s position and can confirm we have ended any interest in the player.’
That development looked to have given Van Dijk’s other suitors a better chance of signing him this summer.
But it seems Southampton’s resolve has only strengthened, with The Telegraph suggesting it would take a bid of £70million to make the South Coast outfit consider letting him leave.
Saints are in a strong position with Van Dijk just one year into a six year deal.
