Life could have been very different for Raheem Sterling if it wasn’t for the words of wisdom from his mum.

As an extremely talented youngster playing Sunday League football, Sterling was being approached to sign for a number of big clubs before he was even a teenager.

Arsenal were one such club expressing a strong interest in securing his signature, and he could have been a Gunner, if it wasn’t for the wise intervention of his mum.

Instead the youngster was convinced to opt for the more modest surroundings of QPR, still a big club, but an environment where coaches could nurture the raw talent and set him on his path to stardom.

At the age of 23 Sterling is not only Premier League champion and a star of England’s World Cupsquad in Russia, but evidence that mum’s really do know best.

“When I was 10 or 11, I was getting scouted by some big clubs in London,” Sterling told The Players’ Tribune . “Fulham wanted me. Arsenal wanted me. And when Arsenal want you, of course you’re thinking you gotta go there. Biggest club in London, you know? So I’m running around telling my mates, “I’m off to the Arsenal!”
