Arsene Wenger has been knocked back by midfield target Maxime Gonalons. The Lyon captain announced his desire to remain at the club all but ending speculation on his future.
Arsenal chief scout Gilles Grimandi has watched Gonalons several times and is a ‘big fan’ of the player advising Wenger to make a bid, however, it seems to late as Gonalons as committed his future to Lyon.
The 24-year old is flattered by the interest he has received, with Napoli also rumoured to be readying a bid, but believes his short-term future lies with Lyon. The French club qualified for the Champions League with a third place finish in Ligue 1 and so he will be testing himself in Europe’s elite club competition.
“I have been approached this summer and it’s always good to know that you’re being followed by great clubs.” Gonalons added “Things are clear. I’m going to stay at Lyon next season because I still have things to learn and things to prove.”
Despite the clarity of his comments, a transfer away next summer could still be an option.
Arsenal are also set to miss out on Lyon colleague Clement Grenier. Wenger has been impressed with the youngsters emergence at the club and likes the creativity and technical ability of the player.
Lyon have insisted the playmaker is not for sale and are close to agreeing a contract extension with the midfielder.
Arsenal have so far struggled in the transfer market with a deal for Gonzalo Higuain close to falling through. The North London side have also had bids rejected for Lars Bender and Luis Suarez as they look for signings who can seriously improve the current squad.
