Olivier Giroud had agreed a contract with Chelsea before the Premier League champions withdrew their offer to Arsenal, according to reports. Antonio Conte is in search of a new striker to provide competition for Alvaro Morata and Chelsea have targeted several different options during the January transfer window. On Monday evening, reports claimed that Chelsea and Arsenal had agreed a £15 million deal for Giroud as the Gunners are desperate to pave the way for Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang’s arrival from Borussia Dortmund. According to L’Equipe, Chelsea have also been in contact with Giroud’s representatives and have agreed a contract with the France striker.
But the report claims that Chelsea removed their offer to Arsenal after the Gunners missed their deadline because they were too preoccupied with finalising Aubameyang’s transfer. Chelsea have now resumed talks with Arsenal but are now considering a move for Tottenham’s Fernando Llorente. The 32-year-old was wanted by Conte last January, as well as in the summer, but Chelsea’s hierarchy refused to meet Swansea City’s valuation and the forward ended up joining Spurs.
