There was clamor from Arsenal fans for Wenger to reinforce the attack of Arsenal during the summer. Unlike Wenger, he yielded to the pressure from the fans and signed Lucas Perez from deportivo.
Despite the plethora of strikers at Arsenal, shockingly, Wenger has favored Alexis Sanchez as his front man than any of his other strikers. Wenger claims Sanchez is giving him what Suarez would have given him.
As quoted by FourFourTwo, Wenger said the following: First of all I had big competition up front. I thought Welbeck could play there, Giroud was playing there with different qualities and I reflected for a long time at the end of the season. I decided to try Sanchez [up front]. He has similarities with Luis Suárez.”
Welbeck has been on the sideline, as well as Giroud who has been battling with a toe injury. However, there absence have not been felt with Sanchez doing well in his new central attacking role.
Sanchez was not convincing at the start of the season in that position, but he has gradually improved with every game and Wenger seem satisfied.
“Game after game, he’s growing into this position and getting better and better. Where he’s strong is that he can dribble, finish and he can also give a final ball.”
Sánchez has netted five goals, created five assists and made 16 chances in total this season from eight matches (all competitions), and will be hoping for many more as the season continues to intensify.
