Arsene Wenger is finally ready to spend this summer and has lined up a move for Manchester City’s Micah Richards.
Wenger has been a long-term admirer of the defender and is finally ready to make a move. The Gunners are worryingly thin all across the squad but especially in defence. Thomas Vermaelen is injured and Laurent Koscielny’s red card against Aston Villa will see him suspended for the Fulham game. He is also suspended for the first leg of Arsenal’s Champions League qualifier leaving Per Mertesacker as the only remaining centre-back. More injuries to Bacary Sagna, Kieran Gibbs and Nacho Monreal have given Arsene a scare at the back.
Richards is a versatile player who is able to play centrally or on either flank and has the strength to battle anyone off the ball. He has two years left on his contract but has refused to sign an extension after seeing his place in the team taken by Pablo Zabaleta.
Richards is an Arsenal fan and could view the move as a chance to restart his career. His pace and strength would see him be a sure starter and his passion as a Gunner would be seen by the supporters. Roy Hodgson has also overlooked the defender several times and a move could see him back in the spotlight, especially in a World Cup year.
