It has been reported that Arsenal have finally moved for a defender in this transfer window. The Metro is reporting that Arsenal have joined the list of clubs vying for the signature of Ajax’s Belgian centre back, Toby Alderweireld.
The versatile defender, who can play at right back too has been the subject of interest from fellow Premier League clubs, Liverpool and Everton. Ajax can sell the Belgian this summer with only a year remaining on his contract. Former Arsenal player, Marc Overmars, who is the Director of Football at the Dutch club has revealed that Ajax have already repelled a move from Atletico Madrid for the player saying, “The offer wasn’t enough for a player of the national team of Belgium.” However, it is understood that Ajax will be willing to part with the player for a fee of around £7.5 million.
Asked about Arsenal’s interest in Alderweireld, Overmars said, “They would need to pay the asking price, if we were to let one of our players go.” Alderweireld would be a good addition to the Gunners, and will help improve the depth of the squad. He will also bring his versatility to the club, and he can prove to be a good option at right back, if Bacary Sagna is converted to a centre back permanently since the Belgian plays at the full back position for his country.
