Arsenal are an interesting club. Beautiful football, frugal spending, fringe budget, maverick manager and unrivaled secrecy. This is the transfer window but Arsenal fans are still awaiting the first piece of real business. All summer, Arsenal have been busy shipping out the dead woods but on the arrival front, it’s all silent except for Sanogo who tip-toed in.
The management of the club have repeatedly boasted of the club’s new found wealth which would see them battle for the big stars in the market but it is still all talk and no real action. The media have linked Arsenal with moves for top players; Higuain, Felliani, Rooney but still no official move confirmed which further frustrates fans.
Today, seems to be a good day going by what Arsenal’s marketing director revealed. He said Arsenal were set to make an audacious stunt.
“@CharlieAllen66: At 3.30 by the Armoury Store tomorrow we will be revealing the away kit with a very audacious stunt. Months of planning now ready #ownit”
What an audacious stunt symbolizes is what we is mysterious. Could it be the unveiling of the kit? That would be a joke of a surprise because images of the kit have already been leaked by media outlets. If that’s the stunt planned, Arsenal will be irking the fans further. Could it be the unveiling of Berkgamp’s statue? As good
as the idea of honouring the Dutchman sounds, the timing will be wrong. Henry and Adams have their statues at the club, a maestro like the Dutchman also deserves his, but what fans are keen to see is not a statue of a legend but the unveiling of a current star that will help halt the trophyless streak.
That brings me to the last option. Could it be the unveiling of a player? The chances are rife that it could be. Unveiling the kit with the announcement of a marquee signing is a perfect combo. It will win the club’s hierarchy more support and also help sell some more season tickets and shirts. Then, the big question, who could be the signing that has been aptly described as an audacious stunt? From my knowledge, audacious means bold. So whoever it is, it must have caused the Gunners some effort and also a deviation from the usual norm.
Could it be Rooney? Arsenal have been linked with the English forward all summer and were quoted in some tabloids to have submitted an official bid. But Manchester United seem unwilling to sanction an exit. Moyes affirmed that he will stay while some reports from Old Trafford revealed that if Rooney really wants a walk away, he will have to make a transfer request. That he hasn’t done at least, not yet. Hence, to a large extent, the chances of him been announced as an Arsenal player this afternoon is very remote.
Could it be Hiiguain? The Argentine striker has for long been linked with an Emirates switch but the deal touted to be close seems farther away after the declaration by Perez that Arsenal are still yet to make a bid. I am not ruling out Arsenal eventually winning the race to sign the Real Madrid forward but will it be as soon as this afternoon? I really doubt it.
Felliani is yet another target that has been linked with Arsenal. Though Arsenal know the demands to be met before they can land the afro-haired Belgian; 22 million Pounds release clause and 100k Pounds weekly wages. Media reports have it that though Wenger is keen, he is reluctant to sanction the payment of the full release
clause and the high wages. As the summer drags on, I don’t dismiss the chances of both parties reaching a compromise but the compromise happening as early as today, I sincerely doubt.
That leaves Cesc Fabregas. It is an over-flogged report that Fabregas isn’t living his dream at Barcelona. Despite winning trophies, he isn’t playing as much as he would have loved and also not playing in his favourite position. He has been linked with a move back to the Premier League with Arsenal and Manchester United as
interested parties. Should Barca decide to sell, Arsenal hold the ace after Wenger negotiated a buy back clause. If the audacious stunt billed for this afternoon is the unveiling of a marquee signing, I suspect it is the Spaniard. His return to the Emirates will send shock waves through England and is definitely a statement of
intent from the Arsenal hierarchy.
Whoever it is from the long list of targets, it will be an audacious stunt because Arsenal will certainly be breaking their age-long transfer record and will be moving
for a player coveted by top clubs.
Rooney- Arsenal, Chelsea, Barca, PSG
Higuain- Arsenal, Juventus
Felliani – Arsenal, Manchester United
Fabregas – Arsenal, Manchester United.
Who or what will it be? The answer is at the amoury.
