Arsenal are set to increase their interest in Swansea City defender Ashley Williams following Thomas Vermaelen’s back injury.
Williams has long been linked with a move to the Emirates but Arsene Wenger bulked at the £10 million valuation. He was odd on to join Arsenal earlier in the season according to many bookmaker such as Bettingfellow but reports claimed Wenger baulked due to the amount Swansea are demanding. However, with Vermaelen likely to miss the first month of the season, the Frenchman is considering making a bid.
The Belgian’s injury leaves the club with only Per Mertesacker and Laurent Koscielny as the only recognised centre-backs. Sebastian Squillaci left the club last month when his contract expired while Johan Djourou has completed his loan move to Hamburg. Youngster Ignasi Miquel will be forced to make the step up to the first team but Wenger is determined to get a replacement in before the league opener against Aston Villa.
Swansea City chairman Huw Jenkins has refused to lower the £10 million asking price which saw Arsenal cool their interest in the Wales captain but the Gunners are readying an offer with the hope of securing his signature.
The 28-year old, who has also been linked with Liverpool, is desperate for the chance to play in the Champions League and is open to a move to Arsenal however he will not force through a move or hand in a transfer request and will only speak to Arsenal should they agree a fee with the Swans.
Wenger hasn’t had much luck in the transfer market so far seeing bids for Luis Suarez, Wayne Rooney and Lars Bender rejected and will hope the signing of Williams will be the springboard of a flux of arrivals at the Emirates this summer.
