Arsenal are closing in on Schalke’s £15 million rated teenager Julian Draxler as manager Arsene Wenger prepares to make full use of his summer war chest. Wenger, who has now gone eight years without winning a trophy has been handed a £70m transfer kitty and is expected to ditch his penny-pinching style and spend big for once to at least keep some of his critics at bay.
Schalke will allow their influential midfielder to leave in the summer for the right price. Draxler, 19 who already has four caps for the German machines, has been watched regularly by Gunners’ scouts and has also attracted the interest of other top sides like Real Madrid.
But this summer Wenger is anxious not to miss out on his targets even if it means paying inflated fees, something he has been loathe to sanction in the past.
Wenger seems to have made a detour from the French market and is now focusing on the German market having been linked with Dortmund’s German midfielders (Goetze and Reus) but apparently, it seems Draxler is a more realistic target owing the price tag and status of Schalke. They are still below Arsenal unlike Goetze and Reus that
would be difficult to tempt since Dortmund seem to be doing better than Arsenal at the moment (winning trophies and doing well in the UEFA Champions League).
What would Draxler add to the team? He is an attacking midfielder and Wenger might be looking at him as a possible replacement for Arshavin who will be leaving the Emirates in the summer. should the German arrive, Wenger would likely play him in the middle and this would allow Cazorla drift to the wings.
While Draxler is a player with bags of potentials, I think we need something better. We need an experienced midfielder and not another youngster that we will build again and would run off at the sight of a better prospect. We already have ample youngsters in the team (Wilshere, Ramsey and Chamberlain).
Schalke will allow their influential midfielder to leave in the summer for the right price which would be around £15m.
