Arsenal are preparing to battle Manchester United in the race to sign Hertha midfielder Arne Maier, who has been dubbed the next Toni Kroos. The two sides have been scouting the 19-year-old extensively this season after he cemented his place in the Hertha engine room, not missing a single minute of Bundesliga action. He has also established himself in the Germany under-21 side, and now The Sun claim both Jose Mourinho and Unai Emery are hoping to lure him to the Premier League.
Maier – who averages the most passes of any Hertha player – is widely expected to be fast-tracked into the senior Germany team. He could command a fee of as much as £30million, and Arsenal head of recruitment Sven Mislintat is likely behind the interest.
The former Borussia Dortmund chief scout has already raided Germany several times since starting his role with Arsenal, signing the likes of Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Sokratis. Hertha are enjoying a strong season, sitting in sixth place in the table, and Maier has been key to their success. Scouts from both Arsenal and United watched him in action at the weekend and are expected to cast their eye over him once again when he takes on Stuttgart next time out.
