Arsenal have been dealt a huge blow with the news that they will be without Henrikh Mkhitaryan for at least three matches.
Speaking after their 3-2 home victory against Southampton, Arsene Wenger confirmed to the club’s official website the full extent of the Armenian’s injury.
He’s got knee ligament damage. He will not be available for Thursday and not for Newcastle and certainly not for the week after, when we play West Ham. I think he will miss these games for sure, but he could still play at the end of the season.
The player was forced off during Arsenal’s emphatic victory over Russian side CSKA Moscow in the Europa League on Thursday.
It didn’t look good for Mkhitaryan at the time, but the severity of the injury was unclear as the club waited for results of a scan to determine the damage.
The former Manchester United attacker is now likely to miss the return leg in Moscow with a place in the semi-finals of the competition at stake.
Wenger believes he will play again this season, but he’ll also miss league meetings against Newcastle and West Ham.
The news is an untimely blow for Arsenal who will hope to chase down London rivals Chelsea for fifth place.
