Arsene Wenger is ready to step up his transfer business after seeing his Gunners team well beaten by Aston Villa on the opening day of the season. His side had looked good in pre-season but injuries and a lack of arrivals saw the team embarrassingly fall to the Villians.
Olivier Giroud, the clubs only recognised senior striker, did manage to find the net but Wenger feels he needs to add another free scoring striker to the squad before he feels confident in his striking talent. The Frenchman has targeted several frontmen in the summer in Stevan Jovetic, Gonzalo Higuain, Wayne Rooney and Luis Suarez. Jovetic was snapped up by Manchester City while main target Higuain opted for Napoli. The Gunners have been pursuing Suarez but Liverpool have refused to sell and the deal looks to be fading away. Rooney is in the same situation as Suarez as Manchester United are not looking to sell.
With time running out Wenger has been forced to draw up other possible targets with Erik Lamela, Samuel Eto’o and Oscar Cardozo believed to be on his list. The latest name is Pablo Osvaldo. The Roma striker has fallen out with the club’s management and both parties want the forward to leave.
He is a controversial figure but can guarantee goals too. He managed 16 goals in Serie A last season but also has a controversial record that involves punching a team-mate because he didn’t pass the ball and arguing with Roma legend Francisco Totti over a penalty and then missing it to make matters worse.
The Gunners need to improve drastically and only have under three weeks to get their team ready. They cannot afford to be fussy on players if it means they will improve the squad, they should be pursuing all targets. Southampton have had a £15 million bid accepted for Osvaldo while Tottenham are also interested in the Italian international so Wenger will have to work hard.
