Arsenal have been told to sign Napoli star defender Kalidou Koulibaly by their former striker Kevin Campbell, according to the Daily Star.
The Senegal international has been linked to the Emirates for a while, with the 53 million price tag on his head proving to be beyond the club’s financial reach.
The Gunners have been in very impressive form this season and are currently on a 21-game unbeaten run. However, they have been unconvincing at the back, conceding over 20 goals in just 18 appearances.
Kevin Campbell like many others believe Koulibaly would be a massive upgrade on their current defensive options.
He tweeted “Arsenal should sign him 100 per cent ASAP.” In response to former Premier League player Don Hutchison’s claim that Koulibaly is one of the best centre backs in the world.
However not everyone shares their admiration as former Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand was less than impressed with the 27-year old’s role in the goal that consigned his team to a 1-0 defeat.
He was turned by Mo Salah before the Egyptian finished past David Ospina for the only goal of the match.
“You know he’s strong, you can’t get tight to somebody who’s stronger than you like that,” Ferdinand said after the game.
“If you get tight, he feels you and uses you and rolls you, which he did to the full-back there.
“And Koulibaly, he stood him up, went past him one v one.
“That’s the first real question we’ve got to ask about Koulibaly, the centre-half.
“He came with a big reputation coming into this game and he got disposed of here.
“One v one, stood up, goodnight, and the goalkeeper here gambled.
“He dived out the goal and dived out the way really.”
Save for that one mistake, the defender still ranks up there with the best, and taking a cue from Liverpool and Virgil van Dijk, the Gunners might just decide to go all out and sign him.
