Arsenal defender Per Mertesacker believes Arsenal should be proud of their signing of Mesut Ozil. The 24-year old completed a move from Real Madrid on deadline day for a club record ?42.4 million. The centre-back revealed that he spoke to Ozil before the midfielder completed his move to the Emirates Stadium.
“We spoke on international duty of course.”
“We discussed our respective experiences – what the coach is like, what the city is like, what the team-mates are like. He only heard good things about Arsenal and London from me.”
“Mesut also knew that both Lukas and I feel very at home there. I think that was in the back of his mind and might have played a role in his decision.”
The duo played together at Werder Bremen and could both take to the field as club colleagues once again before they travel back to North London for Ozil to make his debut as they prepare for World Cup qualifiers with Germany. Mertesacker think Ozil’s signing is a signal of intent from Arsenal and a move that the club should be
very proud of.
“I think Arsenal can be proud that a player like Mesut has chosen the club. Arsene Wenger spoke briefly to me about Mesut but he did not really need my opinion. He has followed Mesut’s career for a long time and always been an admirer of his. For us, the transfer is a gift.”
“It was a gift for me to come here, and the same goes for Lukas. Why would it be any different for Mesut?”
