Arsenal’s pursuit of Real Sociedad Asier Illarramendi could come to an abrupt end after hearing of the hefty valuation of the player.
The Gunners are in desperate need of a midfielder enforcer and have searched for and wide for a suitable addition. The club have been linked with Marouane Fellaini, Ilkay Gundogan, Kondogbia and Maxime Gonalons. Their latest search has led them to Illarramendi.
The Spanish starlet helped Spain U21 to the UEFA U21 European Championship in Israel, a title they successfully defended after winning the previous competition four years ago.
The Gunners were prepared to shell out £9 million for his signature, despite plenty of interest in the midfielder. However, Sociedad are looking to claim the full £25 million release clause.
Real Madrid and Barcelona are also monitoring his situation after witnessing his impressive displays helping Real Sociedad claim Champions League qualification. The El Clasico pair are used to paying such high feels with the Catalans recently splashing just over £50 million for Brazilian sensation Neymar.
Arsenal, however, are used to watching their money with their transfer record standing at a mere £15 million which was paid out to Zenit St. Petersburg to get Andrey Arshavin. The club has been armed with a big transfer kitty, the clubs biggest kitty ever but could look to other options with Everton’s Fellaini cheaper and already experienced in the Premier League.
The club could be set to go the extra mile for Illarramendi having missed their previous young targets in Mesut Ozil and Mario Gotze with both players going on to demonstrate incredible ability. A big money move for the young Spaniard could show their intention in the transfer market.
Arsenal are close to making their first major money signing with the acquisition of Gonzalo Higuain for £22 million.
