One of the transfers that looked a dead rubber for Arsenal this summer with personal terms reportedly agreed and only the fee with Swansea left to be agreed and medical done before the Welsh captain is pronounced a Gunners looks dead in water.
According to Daily Mirror, Arsenal are ready to pull out of the deal after their reluctance to meet the 10million Pounds price tag Swansea slapped on him.
Agreed Williams is a decent defender and will provide good competition for the current first choice pair of Mertesacker and Koscielny but at 10million Pounds, I believe the fee is a little too steep for a 29 year old that’s approaching 30. He doesn’t have ample experience at the top and also the chance of him offering long
term services is remote. But with Arsenal’s new found wealth, one would expect Wenger to sanction the acquisition moreso the uncertainty surrounding two of the club’s center-backs; Koscielny and Vermaelen. Barca, Bayern and Napoli are said to be interested in the duo but for now, both are keen on staying but past evidences
have shown that some players are fickle minded and their loyalty flitting. By the twilight of the summer window when the interest becomes intense, they could be swayed and the only way Arsenal won’t emerge worse off is by having a plan B, Williams is a good one.
A team that want to win titles should be ready to gloss over extra few million Pounds to get in good legs. We have lost very good players in time past because we refused to pay over the odds for them. Guess it’s time to join them since Wenger has been unable to beat them.
