Arsene Wenger is looking to hijack Tottenham’s move for Erik Lamela. The Argentinian has been in negotiations with Spurs with a move imminent but Arsenal have moved to try and steal the attacker from under their neighbours noses.
There are reports suggesting Sabatini left London on bad terms after Tottenham refused to meet the £30 million valuation. Arsenal have taken that as their chance to come in and snap up the talented youngster.
Wenger has had a disappointing summer as priority targets Gonzalo Higuain, Luiz Gustavo and Stevan Jovetic all snubbed Arsenal in favour of others moves. His pursuit of Luis Suarez looks like it will come to nothing while Wayne Rooney favours a move to Chelsea. The Gunners boss failed to make use of Marouane Fellaini’s release clause so he will be determined not to lose any more ground in the transfer market.
It is clear that £30 million will be enough to sign Lamela, but whether Wenger is willing to part with that amount of money remains to be seen. The youngster managed 15 league goals in 33 appearances from the wing for Roma last season and has the ability to play through the middle if needed.
Andre Villas-Boas is likely to come back with another offer to secure the signing so Wenger has a chance to steal him away but must act quick, if he doesn’t he can add Lamela to the list of players that have gotten away this summer.
