Caught Offside believe that Arsenal are weighing up a possible £30 million move for Karim Benzema. The Gunners are eager to bring in a marquee signing after missing out Gonzalo Higuain and their pursuit of Luis Suarez stalling.
The Gunners have been armed with a huge transfer kitty of £70 million but have been unable to use any of it as they have missed out on their key targets so far.
Benzema is thought to be open to a move away from the Bernabeu with Roma rumoured to have entered negotiations with the French striker. The news has alerted Wenger of his availability with ‘Le Prof’ now readying a bid.
Suarez remains the club’s top priority but are determined not to lose out again and have lined up Benzema, as a possible replacement should their efforts to bring in Suarez fail.
Benzema would be a cheaper and younger option that the Uruguayan as well as less controversial but with Suarez already adapted to the Premier League, Wenger still prefers the South American.
Real Madrid remain Suarez’s favourite destination and should the La Liga club enter the bidding for him, then Arsenal would switch their attention on to Benzema to ensure they don’t miss out altogether.
Erik Lamela, Wayne Rooney and Edin Dzeko are all being lined up as possible targets if both bids fail for Suarez and Benzema.
