Arsenal appear to have been handed a huge boost in the race to sign Lucas Torreira from Sampdoria, with reports claiming that Napoli have ended their interest in the player.
The Gunners have been heavily linked with a move for the player this summer but were set to be rivalled by Napoli, who were recently taken over by Carlo Ancelotti.
It was understood that Napoli had agreed to pay Sampdoria the full extent of Torreira’s release clause, which is stated to be worth a fee of just €25m.
This indicated that the Serie A runners-up were in pole position to recruit the Uruguayan midfielder. However, according to fresh reports from Italy, it seems negotiations have broken down.
It’s stated by Corriere del Mezzogiorno, as cited by Football Italia, that after learning of Arsenal’s interest in signing him, Torreira demanded excessive wages from Napoli when discussing a potential transfer.
The midfielder’s efforts to leverage Napoli into offering him a salary claimed to be worth €3m per year proved to be unsuccessful, it seems, with Arsenal now appearing to be allowed a free run at landing the player.
