As reported by The Daily Mail, Arsenal are growing increasingly confident that midfielder Jack Wilshere will sign a new contract at the club.
What’s the story?
Wilshere’s current deal expires at the end of the season and it had begun to look likely he would leave the Gunners this summer, but it appears progress has been made with regards to him staying.
The Daily Mail report Arsenal’s belief that they’ve made a breakthrough in discussions to agree a new deal that is on lower terms than the midfielder’s current £110,000 wage.
The paper reckon that having previously offered an initial deal Wilshere didn’t want to sign, the club have now offered a new package that relies less on incentivised add-ons.
Is he worth a new deal?
Having mostly put his injury problems behind him this season, making 38 appearances in all competitions, Wilshere, who is rated at £16.2m by Transfermarkt, still has plenty to offer the new manager arriving at the club this summer.
For starters he’s a player that will undoubtedly give everything to the Arsenal cause, perhaps giving the new boss the kind of passion that will help them through a difficult early transition period.
He hasn’t contributed hugely to goals this season, with just two scored and five assists, but with more regular starts could bump those numbers up significantly, especially if deployed in a more attacking midfield role.
