Juventus centre-back Giorgio Chiellini would be a dream signing for Arsenal, according to former midfielder Ray Parlour.

New Gunners boss Unai Emery has made five new signings this summer since he was confirmed to replace Arsene Wenger in May.

Among them are a handful of new defenders including Stephan Lichtsteiner and Sokratis Papastathopoulos but Parlour feels Arsenal need further strengthen in that area of the squad.

‘I think Arsenal still need to improve their defence, even after signing Sokratis and Lichtsteiner,’ he told Bwin.

‘They left themselves open far too often last season and it was their away form that cost them.

‘The club needs an old school leader who will put their body on the line and demand the best from his team-mates.‘[Giorgio] Chiellini would be the dream defender, though he’s getting on a bit.’ Thirty-three-year-old Chiellini last month extended his contract with Juve until 2020, when he expects to retire from the sport after what would be a 20-year professional career.

Therefore, the chances of Arsenal ever securing a deal for the ex-Roma and Fiorentina defender appear bleak.

Meanwhile, Laurent Koscielny is out until November with an achillies injury which leaves Arsenal short at centre-back ahead of the coming season.

Defender Calum Chambers has been moved into midfield during pre-season and could be set for a run in the position but Parlour would still like to see Steven N’Zonzi – a former Emery ally – move to north London to bolster the middle of the park.

‘I really like Steven N’Zonzi and would like to see him at Arsenal,’ he added.

‘I think he’s a really good player and he of course has Premier League experience.

‘I’ve been really impressed with him for Sevilla and also for France at the World Cup. ‘If we signed him we would have to let someone go in midfield, but I’d love to see Arsenal get him this summer.’
