Sokratis Papastathopoulos will become Arsenal’s first signing of the summer after completing a medical ahead of his move from Borussia Dortmund.
The Greece international has one year left on his deal in Germany and the two clubs are believed to have agreed a fee of around £16 million.
Sokratis arrived in London on Sunday evening ahead and has spent the past two days putting the finishing touches on his switch to the Emirates.
The 29-year-old’s father Charalambos spoke to 24/7 radio on Monday and revealed that his son had rejected Manchester United in favour of a move to Arsenal.
He said: “There was interest from United. United had a very good relationship with Dortmund, the teams talked the most, but Socrates chose to go to Arsenal.
“He is happy, he is in England at the moment, and tomorrow everything will be done, the formal, everything will go well, he is happy, he is changing, I think he is going to a higher level. English league is the highest in the world, the most competitive and I believe there will go well.”
Arsenal conceded 51 goals in the Premier League last season, only five less than Swansea – who were relegated.
