Arsenal are further away than ever from winning the Champions Leageueand it’s because they have never really replaced the great spine from a decade ago, say former Manchester United Star, Rio Ferdinand.
There is no one in this side that can match players such as Sol Campbell, Patrick Vieira and Thierry Henry.
Those were guys that had big personalities and were men when they went into the changing room.
They demanded the highest standards off each other and I just don’t see that in the Arsenal team at the moment.
Just look at the only Arsenal team to reach the Champions League Final in 2006. Okay, Vieira wasn’t there then but they had Gilberto Silva in midfield, a player who had won the World Cup and was part of the Invincibles’ side two years earlier.
That team was blessed full of winners, people who knew how to go out on the pitch and get the job done.
In all of those people there was a steely ruthlessness that I don’t see from the 2016-17 side.
Sometimes it is down to recruitment. I remember speaking to Sir Alex Ferguson a few years ago and he said it’s more than just buying a player, you’re buying a human being. So you need to find out about them, what they’re like before the deal takes place.
