Arsenal are willing to meet Sampdoria’s €30 million (£26m) asking price to sign Lucas Torreira, according to reports in Italy. The defensive midfielder has a €25m (£22m) release clause in his deal with the Serie A club, but according to Sky Italy, Sampdoria have asked the Gunners to pay €30m and spread the cost out over several years. The report claims Arsenal are willing to accept Sampdoria’s terms as it also works out better for them but they have not yet reached an agreement with Torreira’s agent. Torreira is currently with Uruguay’s squad preparing for their World Cup opener against Egypt on Friday. The midfielder made 38 appearances for Sampdoria last season and is reportedly Unai Emery’s first-choice midfield target.
Arsenal have already completed the first signing of Unai Emery’s reign with the arrival of Stephan Lichsteiner on a free transfer from Juventus last week. The Gunners have also reached an agreement with Borussia Dortmund to sign Sokratis Papastathopoulos, and the Greek centre-back is due to be officially announced next month. Arsenal are also in the race to sign Gelson Martins, with reports in Portugal claiming that the winger is available after terminating his contract with Sporting Lisbon.
