Arsenal have agreed to pay Sampdoria £26.5m for the signing of Lucas Torreira and are now trying to settle on personal terms with the midfielder, according to reports in Italy via the Daily Star.
New boss Unai Emery has made signing a defensive midfielder a priority this summer as he looks to strengthen the squad he inherited from Arsene Wenger that finished sixth in the Premier League table last season.
Granit Xhaka has shown a lack of defensive awareness since joining the club, Jack Wilshere is on the verge of leaving after failing to sign a new contract while Santi Cazorla has left following the expiration of his deal, so we need to sign a proper defensive midfielder and Torreira has emerged as a prime target in recent weeks.
It looks like a deal is on the cards as the Daily Star are now citing a report from Sport Mediaset that claims Arsenal have agreed to pay £26.5m [€30m] to sign the South American and are now working to agree personal terms with the midfielder.
The Italian publication says Torreira has a release clause set at £22m [€25m] but Arsenal are willing to pay a premium so we can spread the payments out in several installments rather than pay his exit fee in one lump sum.
Torreira has been named in the Uruguay squad for this summers World Cup finals so we’d have to move quickly to get a deal wrapped-up before their group stage opener on Friday but the report says we could yet face late competition from Borussia Dortmund and Napoli.
