Watford are reportedly in advanced talks with Arsenal over a move for Kieran Gibbs.
Although West Brom were favourites to sign Gibbs for a little while, Watford have always been in the background and now that the Baggies appear to have dropped their interest, the Mirror claims the Hornets are in ‘advanced talks’ to bring the left-back on board.
Gibbs has been a Gunner his entire adult career, joining Arsenal’s Hale End academy from Wimbledon in 2004 at the age of 14. He signed his first professional contract three years later in September 2007 and hasn’t looked back since, until now.
The 27-year-old apparently wants more playing time. Although injury woes have kept him sidelined in the past, he was only out for 21 days in total last season with a knee injury. Despite this, he still only made 22 appearances across all competitions, playing second fiddle to Nacho Monreal. Only 11 of which were in the Premier League.
Now that Arsenal have signed Schalke left-back, Sead Kolasinac, it appears that Gibbs has slipped even further down the pecking order and the chances of him getting regular football with Arsenal are even slimmer.
It probably doesn’t help that the player known as the ‘Bosnian Hulk’ put in a brilliant display against Benfica in pre-season.
Gibbs has returned to training at London Colney after the summer break but wasn’t even on the bench for Arsenal’s Emirates Cup clash against Benfica on Saturday afternoon, which the Portuguese champions lost 5-2.
Newcastle have also been linked, as have Stoke.
