Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has admitted to being interested in the West ham midfielder, he previously turned down the opportunity to sign Payet due to his lack of consistency.
Payet, 29, joined West Ham from French side Marseille at the beginning of last season and was a revelation for Slaven Bilic’s side.
The Frenchman’s form earned him earn a call-up to France’s European championship squad Payet continued his sublime form with a brilliant goal as France beat Romania 2-1 on the opening day of European championship, raising questions over why he has not secured a move to a bigger club.
Arsene Wenger has now admitted he considered signing the French international for Arsenal. But he said he decided against bringing the midfielder to north London because he was not consistent enough.
After being asked if he had considered signing Payet in a Q and A with Konbini, Wenger said: “Yes. Often. Very often, I have to say that I asked myself that question during my career.
“And I also have to say that I decided against it because he was not consistent. I have never doubted that he had enough talent to play in my team.
“I have been lucky enough in my club to always have very good players in his position and it was crowded!”
According to the Guardian and the Telegraph, This is not the first time Arsene Wenger has suggested the Gunners have either missed or declined to sign a star player, with West ham midfielder Payet joining a long list of names that includes Lionel Messi, Cristiano Ronaldo and Zlatan Ibrahimovic.
