After all the hassles of the immediate past transfer window, Arsenal are now looking to improve the contracts of some players so as to extend their stay at the Emirates.
Among other players close to seeing out their current contract is Arsenal’s captain Per Mertesacker. However, Arsene Wenger has confirmed that the club have not offered the German international another contract for the now.
The BFG is currently sidelined after he sustained a knee injury earlier in the summer. He has been scheduled to return next year.
Although, he was appointed as the captain of Arsenal, Arsene Wenger confirmed that Arsenal are yet to offer the German defender a new deal – and will wait until he’s fit again to make a decision
“At the moment we have not dealt yet with that situation,” he told Talksport.
“We are not especially [waiting for him to be fit], but of course he has to come back.
“We will see together at some stage when he will be back in full training.”
Mertesacker’s route back into Wenger’s starting line-up has been made difficult by the summer arrival of Shkodran Mustafi and the impressive youngster Rob Holding.
The defender signed from Valencia for £35million late in the summer transfer window and has started recent matches against Southampton and Paris Saint Germain.
