When Unai Emery first began to contemplate life as Arsenal manager, the question of solving the side’s defensive issues must have been one of the first to cross his mind. No team in the Premier League’s top 7 came close to their 51 goals conceded last season, and a continuation of that record would undoubtedly leave their chances of a return to the Champions League very slim indeed.
So, upon, taking up his post, the Spaniard got to work. Bernd Leno, Stephan Lichtsteiner, Sokratis Papastathopoulos and Lucas Torreira have all been signed with a view to keeping things tight at the back, and reports suggest that he’s far from done yet.
Another signing is in the offing, and it looks set to be a truly significant one.
Presnel Kimpembe has, for a number of years, been considered as one of Paris Saint-Germain’s best young prospects and the future of France’s defence. In breaking into his club’s first team and the all-conquering French World Cup 2018 squad, he has begun to prove it.
The fact remains, however, that he is not guaranteed a starting spot with PSG and, having enjoyed a great bond with Emery during the time they spent together in the French capital, it’s now believed that he would be open to a move to North London in order to get one.
