Daniel Taylor has written about Chelsea’s potential mistake in selling Nemanja Matic to Manchester United. He points out that United have been reluctant to sell players to rivals in similar situations, as Wayne Rooney (wanted by Manchester City and then Chelsea), and Gabriel Heinze (wanted by Liverpool, who are awful) found out. Only Cristiano Ronaldo has really left against Alex Ferguson’s will. Well, him and Zeki Fryers. Oh, and Paul Pogba.
Wayne Rooney is now destined for a recall to the England team. There is no denying his goals, but from the looks of his Everton performances there is still a chronic lack of fitness and control. If Rooney is pushing himself in training and treating his body better, then there is no reason why he can’t rediscover much of what made him an excellent player. There’s no point for regrets, though – it hasn’t happened yet, and there’s no guarantee he’ll ever be good enough again for United.
Anthony Martial believes that Paul Pogba is on his way to becoming the best player in the world. It’s certainly possible, but remember one thing: Jordan Henderson is fit again, and raring to go. He could certainly be just as good, IF NOT BETTER, than Pogba.
Manchester United and other clubs are after Arsenal’s 18-year-old player Marcus McGuane. The midfielder has captained Arsenal sides, and plays regularly for the under-23s. However, he’s in the last year of his contract, and Manchester City, Juventus and Napoli are all also interested.
Andreas Pereira and Luke Shaw both wish to remain at United and fight for their respective places. Pereira seems the more promising prospect, given he isn’t 90% fecklessness, and has the technical ability to match almost anyone at the club. But if he won’t get the games this season, perhaps another loan would make sense. As for Shaw, it’s difficult to care either way.
