Reiss Nelson says there’s more to come from him this season, and although he wants to keep scoring goals he knows he has to do more than that to be a success.

Nelson scored his fifth goal for Hoffenheim over the weekend, a stunning effort to give them the lead in their eventual 4-1 victory. Things couldn’t have started much better for the 18-year-old on loan, but he admits he needs to keep working hard and improving the elements of his game that haven’t been as perfect as his finishing so far.

“Every day I’m training hard and I’m trying to get into the starting eleven,” Nelson told Bundesliga.com“I think I can bring goals to the team as well, but it is just the start of my career here. I need to just keep pushing and score as many goals as I can.

“Not just goals, but doing other things for the team like tracking back and getting involved with the play and hopefully I can go on.”

Nelson’s goal contributions have all been vital so far. He has two equalisers, two goals and one assist that gave his team the lead, and one goal to get them back into the game at 2-0 down. There hasn’t been any stat-padding, with teammates gifting him goals at the end of games to get his confidence up.

Nonetheless, the winger is right that he can still improve. He’s creating one chance per appearance so far, which is a decent return. However, with his dribbling ability, he could be making more chances. Working hard off the ball to win it back is another key attribute to add to his game if he wants to succeed on his return to Arsenal under Unai Emery.

All this to say, let’s take things one step at a time. Nelson’s made a great start, now it’s about showing consistency over the course of a full season.
