News broke on Monday afternoon that Marc Overmars is returning to Arsenal and will be leaving his current position with Ajax in Holland with the Dutchman is expected to leave his position as director of football at the end of the season.

No reports have yet confirmed the exact role he will be taking at Arsenal, but it is expected that he will take a position similar to his current role with Ajax.

Overmars, now 44, who played under Arsene Wenger at Highbury from 1997 to 2000 scored 25 goals in 100 appearances and was one of a long list of club legends playing under Wenger around that time. He will be joining the likes of Freddie Ljungberg, Robert Pires and Jens Lehmann as former players who have returned to Arsenal in a coaching or backroom capacity.

Overmars has once talked about the possibility of him taking the job via Sportwitnes:

“I think there is a list with some names and I might be on it, but it’s not that exciting yet. I know the club pretty well, I have always kept in touch with Arsenal. So in that respect it is not surprising, because I’ve had a few good years…”

Along with Overmars, Dennis Bergkamp is consistently being linked with a return to the club, so perhaps Arsenal are starting to creak into action behind the scenes and thinking about life after Wenger finally when his current deal expires in 2019.

Wenger has never been keen on bringing someone in to a role of this type to The Emirates, saying he could never understand what a Sporting Director actually does but with his days at Arsenal coming to an end, perhaps he’s been overruled as the club prepares for life post-Wenger. So, despite neither of these ex-players having set the world alight since they left in their various roles, perhaps an Overmars-Bergkamp Arsenal dream team combo could be on the cards soon?
