A visibly upset Nabil Fekir appeared to bid farewell to Lyon on Saturday night before hinting that he could leave the club this summer amid growing links with Liverpool.
Reports in France emerged two weeks ago suggesting Liverpool were on the verge of completing a deal for France international Fekir, with one outlet now claiming the transfer is ‘99% done’.
Fekir started Lyon’s final game of the season – a thrilling 3-2 victory at home to Nice – and his reaction at full-time suggested his time as captain of the club may be coming to an end.
An emotional Fekir hit the turf as the final whistle blew, sobbing on the floor before being embraced by his teammates and manager.
He had been substituted just moments earlier to a standing ovation and gave a prolonged wave to the home fans, while Canal+’s commentator even spoke about his move to Liverpool as though it was a formality.
Unsurprisingly, Fekir was asked whether his reaction was a farewell to the Lyon faithful, to which he replied: ‘Farewell? Maybe. Frankly, I don’t know.
‘I spent an exceptional season here with the player, the fans and the staff. It ended beautifully.
‘You have to pass a course, it’s true. I think I gave everything in Lyon. Now it’s time to look into the future.’
Lyon president Jean-Michel Aulas also changed his stance that Fekir would not be sold, saying after the game:
‘We wanted to see which competition we would be playing next season before discussing it. ‘I am someone who always respects my players’ wishes once they have brought what they have brought, like Corentin Tolisso and Alexandre Lacazette. We will discuss to see what Nabil wants.’
