After securing an unlikely victory over Chelsea to win this season’s FA Cup trophy, it’s time to reflect on an eventful year for Arsenal’s first-team squad.

Who have been the club’s best performers this season?

In no particular order…

5Laurent Koscielny

Arsenal’s best defender this term, Koscielny has cleared benefited from regular experience in England’s top flight as his ball-winning ability has rarely wavered.

There is undoubtedly disappointment at the fact that he didn’t feature in this season’s FA Cup Final, having been sent off for a needless sliding challenge on Enner Valencia. There are still moments of hesitancy where the centre-back’s decision-making can be questioned but it’s clear to see how missed he is when unavailable through injury or suspension.

4Granit Xhaka

Xhaka’s arrival in England brought an international midfielder with steel to the Premier League. His reputation for poor discipline hasn’t helped him avoid being an easy target for bookings from referees but it’s clear to see a learning curve, one that the 24-year-old will cite as valuable experience ahead of next season.

He’s added urgency and precision in midfield to his excellent passing range so deserves his place here.

3Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain

Arsenal’s most improved player and one that has unsurprisingly attracted interest from elsewhere in the process, the Ox has excelled when called upon to play in a range of different positions across the field.

Despite seeing his long-term future as a central midfielder, Alex regularly starred in unfamiliar roles and crucially stuck to his task effectively.

2Shkodran Mustafi

Although the centre-back partnership of ‘Kostafi’ hasn’t been utilised enough at times, Mustafi has shown his ability to settle and earned his place in the starting lineup.

The 25-year-old provides more defensive stability than Gabriel whilst regular interceptions and an aggressive tackling nature ensure he’s not passive out of possession.

Everyone makes mistakes and errors in judgement but Mustafi’s first season in the Premier League will stand him in good stead for the rest of his time at Arsenal.

1Alexis Sánchez

Last but certainly not least, Alexis has once again been Arsenal’s best player this season.

30 goals and a further 19 assists across all competitions doesn’t do him justice, as his admirable, never-say-die attitude has a positive impact on the rest of the team.

An energetic player who is never content, it’s refreshing to see from someone so experienced and Alexis’ presence is an important part of the club’s impetus going forward.

It is essential that he’s tied down to a long-term contract this summer as he’s one of a handful of players that are almost irreplaceable at the top level.
