Arsenal have been dealt a major blow in their pursuit of Paris Saint-Germain wonderkid Yacine Adli, according to reports in France.
The Gunners looked to have wrapped up an agreement for Adli, with the 17-year-old midfielder poised for an official unveiling ahead of the 2018/19 campaign.
Unai Emery worked closely with Adli in Paris and was determined to bring the highly-rated Frenchman to the Emirates as his first signing.
However, according to Le Parisien, a ‘top Spanish club’ – believed to be Real Madrid – have made a last-ditch move in recent hours to land the youngster. While Madrid, as well as Bayern Munich, have maintained an interest in Adli for some time, Arsenal were confident that they had already won the race for his signature.
It’s understood Emery has guaranteed Adli regular game-time at Arsenal, but the teenager may still opt against a switch to north London. Any club set to sign Adli will have to pay a compensation fee in order to push through a deal.
Adli attracted interest from around Europe with his stellar performances for France at the Under-17 World Cup last year.
The midfielder also impressed in the UEFA Youth League with a string of accomplished displays for PSG.
Finally, Adli was named as PSG youth player of the year for the just concluded season.
