Arsenal will have to move quickly if they want to sign Napoli’s Elseid Hysaj as the Italians are trying to get him to sign a new contract that would see his release clause increase from £44m to £70m (€80m).
The Gunners are reportedly in the market for a new right-back with Hector Bellerin the only proper option for that slot at present, but a move for Hysaj would only make sense if Arsenal are planning on getting rid of Bellerin this summer.
You don’t spend over £40m+ for a backup full back.
Under contract until 2021, Napoli want the Albanian to sign a new deal amid reportedly heavy interest from both Arsenal and Manchester United, the latter looking to replace Matteo Darmian.
His form has been patchy for over a season now and his head was certainly turned by Barcelona’s interest in the summer.
Arsenal, for their part, know that they can command a massive fee for the defender given his ability, age, and, contract status. Selling one of the best young defenders in football, however, is not a move that would be welcomed by fans as the club try to convince people they are not just in this game to make money.
It also makes no sense to sell Bellerin and then spend the majority of that money on replacing him.
This is far from the first time we’ve been linked with a move for Hysaj. Last summer we looked at the rumours and concluded that he won’t come to Arsenal. You can read our reasoning here.
